What a shame.
I followed this guy back in the day, he was the best example in and out of the ring. I felt a better fighter than Roberto Durant. What the hell is going wrong with this world.

I saw the story that Arguello had died, but I’d never heard of him or seen him fight. Great fighter with a lot of class, really the kind of respect you see today in MMA. Thanks for posting this.

Dr. Benjamin on mmajunkie had a great article about brain damage and combat sports. Depression is a common symptom of brain trauma.

Damn shame anybody should go through that. Wasn’t familiar with his work, but looks like he was a monster in the ring.

RIP

What a shame, I really can’t understand what goes on in people’s minds that makes them take their own lives.

Arguello was one of the slickest boxers ever and I loved watching his fights. He’d been in some serious wars and his ko of Boom Boom Mancini was epic.

I wish his family all the best as the victims now are those left in his wake, RIP.

WOW… sad

at 3:00 that was one of Mike Tyson’s trainer that he knocked out… if you look up the video, you will hear the sound that the punch makes when it lands… LOUD!

In this age of prima-dona, over hyped (yes you dela Hoya you are a MEXIcan’t) boxers, it’s easy to forget what boxing was really like before the age of the wealthy promoters!!

RIP

one of the greatest latin american boxers to ever grace the ring. A true warrior and a true gentleman. Along with Roberto Duran and Julio Cesar Chavez, Arguello was one of 3 Greatest latin fighters of all time.

But I think that title definitely belong to Panamanan Roberto Durán.

Sad day for boxing or any martial arts sports.

A true legend is gone. God have him on his grace.

Rest in Peace

1 of the holy trinity of Latin fighters; Duran, Monzon & the great Alexis Arguello arguably the greatest featherweight of all time. Espino you’ve got to be kidding mentioning Chavez along with Duran & Arguello and not mentioning Monzon?

I still remember his fight vs future Tyson trainer Kevin Rooney; what a monstrous right hand in the 2nd rd it was like a shotgun going off.

This guy was a true legend. My condolensces to his family and friends. I remember his last fight with Aaron Pryor when I was about 4, it was one of the fights that made me a boxing fan. I hope they look into this though, it is hard to think someone would shoot themselves in the heart. Maybe that was his goodbye, that he didn’t have the heart to go on.

RIP my friend

One of the reasons I still love boxing is from watching Arguello while growing up. Always exciting & always put forward his best. His fights vs. Ganigan, Mancini, Rooney, Costello, Escalera, & of course Pryor were all great to watch.
A class act all the way.

really remarkable human being – an not just in the ring but to a struggling country during war and civil unrest – i remmember the pryor fights, when butch lewis, in pryors corner, when arguello was edging pryor, gave pryor a substance from a water bottle that lifted his struggling fighter. The bottle suspeciously dissappreared. Pryor would have lost the fight, ironically pryor lost in life to drugs and arguello a VICTOR for years to come!

Alexis Arguello was a gentleman and a luxurious boxer, with perfect technique, great style and a devastating right hand. His last two wars with Aaron Pryor, that Arguello had going up on his weight category, were tremendous and took a big toll on both fighters, that never more were the same (Arguello abandonned boxing and Pryor remained been the shadow of what he was).
When the Sandinist took the power in Nicaragua, they stole the money that Arguello won bravely over the rings. Very much years later, they used him to win an election.
It is true that an overdosis of punches to the head is related with depression. I red this many years ago in an article about the “punch drunk syndrome”.
Rest in peace Alexis.

He was a motherfucker with the Power of a God and the grace of a true Gentlemen! He boxed in arguably boxings greatest Era and is one of the greatest period. You will never ever talk about the lightweight division without talking about Alexis! He stood toe to toe with Pryor, humbled Mancini and finished Kevin Rooney (Tyson former trainer) Whatever it was that was bothering you Alexis it wasn’t worth taking your life! You were and are now and will always be appreciated by your boxing fans!
Rest now my friend!
