Obviously a Penn win, but he still looked like he was on his was to gassing out. I’d like to see him fight that Joe from Boston that just smashed Penn’s protege Lauzon. Penn’s not the beast that he boasts he is because he couldn’t even score a takedown to use his super ground submission game. He won’t be champ for long.

Personally I rate both fighters highly; I like neither one more than the other and respect what each of them bring to the table.
This was the only fight of the night that I just couldn’t call. This was because I knew that it would simply come down to which of them executed a superior game plan. As we’ve just seen that was BJ (this time anyway?).
Against Sherk, BJ used one of his strengths in his stand-up, which is also arguably Sherk’s biggest weakness. Sherk might have the planned to stand up with BJ, at least until he gassed before exploiting BJ on the ground. But we’ll never find out.

In regards to the stoppage: good call.
Sherk didn’t even dispute it! When asked about the timing of the stoppage he replied, quote: “I didn’t even hear the bell.” That said it all really…

Whether you love or hate Sherk, you must at least admire him. The ignorance some of you have portrayed is just nonsense.

bmoore, BJ’s plan was to knock out Sherk from the get go. In one of his interviews up to the fight he said he wanted to knock Sherk out and guess what? Homeboy got knocked the fuck out. Just not in the first round like BJ wanted.

Currently, BJ has no competition in the UFC lightweight division. Sean Sherk already defeated Kenny Florian and BJ would do likewise. Roger Huerta, while very good and aggressive, is still unpolished skill wise and would probably lose to Kenny Florian. The next logical step for BJ, If Dana would allow it, would be to fight GSP. However, there is one lightweight fighter out there who could match up well with BJ Penn but is in another fight organization, his name is Gilbert Melendez.

Good win for BJ, but the UFC should fine him a quarter of his purse for his actions after the fight.
