It sucks that u can win just because of takedowns even if they don’t even do anything with it.
P:S:Takedowns shoudn’t count for points (specialy if the guy on the botton even clip u more than the other guy).
i want to see TAKANORI GOMI VS Georges St Pierre !!!
GSP can and will do that eveytime BJ Penn steps in there with him. No disrspect to BJ at all(Hes one of my fav) but GSP is the total package. GSP is going to be a media star, a star in the UFC, and a hve a huge fan base in MMA. Wait a min, he already has all of that…WAR GSP!!!!!Good luck tonight man, kick some Serra ass…
Getting a takedown in itself is a skill, especially against someone like BJ Penn. It’s a key part to wrestling, one of the key parts to MMA so of course it should count.
I don’t even get your “P.S” part, there’s points from the takedown.. and then what happens on the ground is seperate.
Anyway, that fight was close. fightmetric.com (the most accurate decision making ‘thing’ out there for mma fights) said it was close enough to be called a draw.
Gomi is a lightweight…isn’t he?
yeah, lets not count takedowns anymore, and while were at it, lets not count leg kicks.
GSP used his strengths and showed that wrestling and bjj together are more powerful than bjj alone.
Acosta, St. Pierre landed some good shots from the top, some to the head, but especially to the body. And with all that gravity and weight behind them, those shots from the top hurt a lot more then the clips from the bottom. The top position is a serious advantage in a fight where striking is allowed. So it only makes sense that being able to take the top at will scores points.
GSP won you BJpenn nuthuggers!
Look at their faces who would you rather be after the fight is over.
gsp’s face didn’t get POUNDED by bjpenn. he was just clipped and poked in the eye. very good fight either way. i wanna see a rematch. just to be sure. i dont care if hughes beat penn the last time. he didn’t have enough time to train on his cardio. that’s why gsp said “i am not imbressed by your berformance”.. so deal with steroid sherk and eat some mcdonalds and fight gsp again. for me?
All the people talking about how GSP lost the fight because his ”face was all busted up” need to grow up. how the hell is that criteria for judging a fight? You can get a busted up face with two punches. the punch that opened the cut on GSP’s face was just a clip. still a close fight but GSP won on points.
if doing damage to an opponents face is criteria for winning a fight then those two douche bags, david Louaseau and kenny florian are the best fighters around. I hate fighters who just try to open cuts to stop the fight, they just have a blood fetish
one of the greatest fights ever… a great example of how being good at everything is better than being great at almost everything.
GSP was in the hospital after this fight….dont tell me he wasnt hurt by penn
I can tell milkman has never been in a fight.. If you want to give the win to whomever gets the most takedowns well there is a sport for that already. If you want to find out who wins a fight then there has to be a way to score the damage done and taken.
I think some people forget this is a fight not a wrestling match.
i think the only reason penn lost this fight was due to poor cardio, as with the fight he lost to hughes. Now that he’s finally worked on his cardio…I’d like to see those rematches. But he would have to put on muscle mass to go up to 170 and not fat mass! Otherwise he’d be back at square one.
of course he was hurt by Penn…he probably got his nose broken, hence the need to go to the hospital. hell he was probably physically damaged more than Penn was. but that was only the first round. GSP definitely won the next two. say what you want about takedowns counting too much, but GSP controlled where the fight went so that counts to his advantage of ring generalship/points.
bj pen won you gsp nuthuggers
The reason why most of us are saying “look at GSP’s face” is because eventhough GSP took BJ down he didn’t do any damage with the position. I know most of you like GSP cause he’s anice guy and all, but that has nothing to do with the fight.
I’m not really a fan of both these guys I just want the better fighter to get the win and I don’t think GSP was the better “fighter” but hands down GSP would win in a wrestling match.
hey vegas…i’d rather be the winner after the fight was over.
bj pen lost you gsp nuthuggers
Oh dear, someone’s got out of their way to make a TV couple/double profile to make a lame old call.
Last time I checked, GSP’s hand was raised. And, at least learn how to spell “Penn” you cretin.
I’m glad I’ve finally managed to watch this one.
Well worth the viewing.
I agree with the judges on this one: I judge it as a split decision in favour of GSP. A very close fight though.
Ok heres a question, who would have a better chance to win. BJ Penn moving up to 170, or St. Pierre going down to 155? My answer is BJ Penn moving up. George St. Pierre really only won because he had the size advantage to hold BJ on the fence and get him tired. If he lost the size advantage which he would at 155, BJ penn would have knocked him out or submitted him.
gsp stand up is not as good as his ground game. he has beaten alomost everyone on the ground but not on stand up. his chin is questionable. penn definitely has more natural talent. gsp will tap out to avoid getting seriously hurt unlike some fighters who refuse to tap. i would like to see him fight fitch next, that should be a good match. both very strong on the ground and big as a welter weight.
just watched it bj penn rounds 1 and 2 round 3 tie now u do the math people!!!
To the guy who said “this is a fight, not a wrestling match,” this is not “either/or”. This is *Mixed* Martial Arts. You can’t count on damage alone because some people bleed easier then others. The scoring system does a good job of making sure fighters show us a good mix of martial arts skills in the ring. Penn got dominated completely on the ground, and didn’t dominate enough on his feet to win. GSP bled a bit, but those shots never staggered him even once. So he bleeds more easily the Penn… that in no way takes away from the fact that he showed himself to be the more complete martial artist that night.
An out of shape Penn fought almost to a draw with a well cardio St. Pierre. Imagine what Penn could do with good cardio. i hope to see a rematch, maybe one of them can pull a Dan Henderson and hold 2 titles. Im a fan of both but a bigger Penn fan cuz we from da island CHEEEEEEEEEEEEHOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!
I’m a fan of both but its a clear win for GSP. The blood due to a poke in the eyes and just a clip that created that and he get POUNDED by penn. This was a very good fight !!! Rematch please!!!!
RE WHITEY: I don’t think you know where the term “Mixed Mrtial Arts” came from. MMA is not a term given to the sport by the UFC to describe or used as a guide on how to judge matches. “Mixed Martial Arts” was used to describe matches Antonio Inoki put on in the 1970s. UFC did not make up the term “Mixed Martial Arts.”
You can call it anything you want, but you don’t bleed unless you get hit. At no time in the match did GSP have BJ in trouble, and how many times did GSP back up after getting hit (everytime). I can see if he took BJ and put him in trouble there but he didn’t. You know BJJ guys can finish a fight from their backs so why would they want to stop the takedown. If all it took to win rounds is get more takedowns well wheres the “mix” in that. It has to come down to damage take a picture of BJ and GSP after the fight and go ask 100 random people who won the fight what do you think they would say?
I want to adress several points:
1) Penn did not look that out of shape to me, for those of you who claim he was. GSP had his nose broke (for those of you who have had this done, it seriously restricts your breathing). So drop you dumb ass comments about the shape factor.
2) For those who say to much emphasis is put on takedowns, I have this reply. This is not a boxing match. This is not BJJ. It is a sport that rewards all aspects of the game.
3) GSP landed several big shots on his feet and on the ground. BJ made one significant submission attempt which didn’t go anywhere. So for vegas (a guy im sure has never fought before), if a BJJ guy like Penn “didn’t want to stop takedowns” because of his submissions, then he should have finished a submission.
Good fight. GSP clearly won rounds 2 and 3 and therefor the fight. For those of you who don’t like how MMA is scored, watch boxing or another sport that satifies.
While JW has some problems with grammar and spelling, I agree with most of the comments he made. I am a huge Penn fan, but I am true to the sport and feel he fairly lost a very close fight. I look forward to a possible rematch.
I apologize for the “bad english”. I wrote my comments quicly and didn’t bother to read over or check my spelling.
they both suck
andy wang would beat the shit out of both of them at the same time
I agree takedowns shouldnt be awarded any points if the fighter cant do anything with it(damage or submission attempts).
As for the comment of “it takes skills for a takedown” I agree but it also takes skills to stand back up wich is what BJ did all fight long.
MMA fights should be judged on damage and attemps to finish a fight.
Leave wrestling its lay and pray and
Boxing its jab and run
boo hoo hoo everyone with your if only his cardio was better , these are fighters , and cardio is one of the most important parts of training and if you dont do it then your a lazy idiot gsp comes prepared bj didnt thats that
great match, i give it up to both guys but reading some of the comments above……..bj penn lost no doubt and if you think otherwise, you probably took a few hits to the head yourself. i’m a fan of both but the better fighter won. peace out.
LOL at Vegas. Alright so maybe we shouldn’t have judges in a fight anymore and no more 10 point must system. Let’s just take pictures of the fighters and ask 100 random people who won the fight. LOL.. that is just ridiculous.
This is not a street fight. This is a sport. There are rules. If there are no KOs or submissions, the fighter who won more rounds by points wins. If you don’t like that, go start your own league.
Love them both.. Some of the best Work that I’ve Seen and with every T.D.-Grapple- or exchange, we watched 2 Masters fight- In what me and my boxing world would call a draw.
I boxed all through my youth and have in the last three years been intro-ed to MMA. The past 2 years we have been working with BJJ. But is a developed wrestling skill more important???
GSP is the shit he is my fav. fighter BJ PEN is pretty good but no one stands against GSP.
A rematch is well deserved. Both fighters have another chance to go at it again and this time around we should see more of a clear cut victory. Both fighters have their advantages and disadvantages, so this fight is a toss up in my mind. You can not count out either one of these fighters and this is what makes this fight so damn intriguing. Cant wait for the rematch on January 31 Super Bowl weekend.
They’re both awesome fighters. Anyone who saw that fight and thought BJ won is just talking trash because they like BJ, or don’t understand MMA. Who cares where the term MMA comes from? Irrelevant. It is a sport and there is a scoring system. What if BJ Penn had good cardio? That’s ridiculous…he doesn’t. Never has. Never will. It’s important and he’s too naturally gifted to have the discipline to work harder than he has to…that’s why he hasn’t improved in recent years. He is what he is, and if it’s not enough he loses. GSP is constantly improving and still young and hungry. He trains like a maniac and it shows. BJ will have to finish him in the 1st or 2nd round or he’s going to gas as always. No way in hell an exhausted BJ is going to beat a strong GSP…and GSP can stay strong for 5 rounds or more. Oh, and if a picture of faces should determine the outcome of a fight, then Forrest Griffin has lost every fight he’s ever been in…oh…wait…he holds the belt…just like GSP. If a football team has more points at the end of the game, they win…who cares what they look like afterward? That’s loser talk. If you don’t want to lose a fight, don’t let it go to the judges. BJ is one of my favorite fighters, but he’s lazy due to his natural athleticism. GSP is naturally gifted, but he’s always trying to improve in every aspect. GSP will beat him by referee stoppage in the 2nd or 3rd round.
Let’s face it…if you think either fighter has no chance against the other, you are biased…and that’s ok. Cheering for your favorite fighter/s is a great thing in MMA…makes it exciting. Either fighter could take this battle if they fight their fight and exploit mistakes. This is true of any fight with top level fighters. BJ Penn is outstanding on the ground…but GSP has some of, if not the best, submission defense. He’s spent the least amount of time on his back of all MMA fighters, and has the best takedown defense percentage…as well as takedown success percentage. He has some of the best cardio and is one of, if not the most, athletically gifted fighters in MMA history. His weakness came due to his meteoric rise to the top at a young age…he lost focus…but regained it and he’s better than ever and he’s only 27. He has a full arsenal of honed weapons and can go 5 hard rounds. BJ shot to the top, lost focus, and regained it as well…is just as talented a fighter, but has some weaknesses we have all seen…conditioning and training focus…as well as the fact that he hasn’t improved much in recent years. He can not last 5 rounds, nor could he ever…he’s never needed to. If he doesn’t finish GSP in the fist or second round, he will gas…and the new GSP will own him. BJ was gassed half way through the first round in their first fight. As they are two of my all time favorite fighters, I hope each one shows up in top form and mentally strong. This has the potential to be a great fight. If money were on the line, I’d have to go with GSP. I just can’t see BJ finishing him before he gasses. I know he has the skills, but GSP has the counters and defenses. Both have great stand up, but once you’re gassed, you have no power. One of the only things that can nullify great submissions is great wrestling and submission defense…both of which GSP posseses. He owns world class wrestlers at their own game. He’s just too well rounded for BJ to be able to effectively utilize his strengths. He does deserve a fight with GSP…he’s not new…he’s not up and coming…he’s BJ Penn. Either way, both fighters are champions and will evolve into legends. I’d say look for a referee stopage in the 2nd or 3rd round with an exhausted BJ Penn getting pounded by GSP.
how has BJ “not improved”? did you happen to see his boxing against Sherk? While his striking has always been adequate, it was amazing against Sherk..the head and footwork was top notch…his cardio has improved as well. His wrestling is getting better and couple that with an already superior bjj game, he is dangerous anywhere this fight goes. To say he hasn’t stepped his game up is ignorant. Will he win? i hope so, but i can see either fighter winning this one.
Sean Sherk is a midget and has T-Rex arms … of course his boxing looked better. He still has yet to go the full five and the guys he’s beaten aren’t in the same league as the guys GSP has beaten except Sherk. Jens Pulver got soundly thrashed by Faber and Leonard Garcia. Joe Stevenson just got choked out in the first by Ken Flo. I don’t want to marginalize Penn’s achievements but Sherk is the best guy he’s beaten as of late. Josh Koscheck , Jon Fitch and Matt Hughes are all better than Sherk.
i love how so many people are on gsp’s tip!! What fight would you say sums up his career? or what has he done as a legen?? o beat hughes? cool BJ beat hughes at his prime both fighters also lost to fat hughes.. ok so what matt serra? who was also beat in his prime by bj be it an ugly bout. what fitch??? HAHAHAHa i guarantee half if not 3/4’s to most of you havent even heard his name before! and what did he do?? take gsp’s best at his best all the way to the fifth round and to the judges. come on now… that isnt a champ. i bet fitch beats gsp after bj does.
anything can happen but bjs stand up is way better then gsp thats why in the first fight gsp had to take it to the ground at all costs… then what did he do?? NOTHING except get punched and elbowed and almost submitted. did he make even one submission attempt?? bj def got gassed but look at him now! hes ready and has a grudge… a determined bj is a dangerous man. two belts first time in ufc.
i just hope all you gsp lovers dont jump on the bj band wagon after he bloodys the poster boys precious little face.
I give the odds to GSP.
John Fitch was a beast with an iron chin, and he was completely dominated by St. Pierre.
Sean Sherk is no joke either but he has short weak jabs and he tried to box with BJ b/c he was afraid of being submitted. Bad strategy and not a real challenge to BJ.
That said, BJ is a DANGEROUS man. He could win with a well-placed uppercut, or with a sudden guillotine choke or triangle. GSP’s frailty is a weak chin. He trains like a beast but one thing you can’t train is an iron jaw and he just doesn’t have it (bleeds easily as well). I also suspect he is less flexible than say Anderson Silva and therefore easier to submit.
My guess is that GSP spends the first few rounds chopping at BJ with leg kicks, and finishes him with a takedown + strikes in round 3. He knows how dangerous BJ is and he will not get careless like he did with Matt Serra.
70% chance GSP wins, 30% chance BJ pulls a Rashad and KTF out of GSP (or pulls a crazy submission).
st p. is the package, that boy has a great hart!
Wow…for those of you talked as much trash about GSP as BJ did, I REALLY hope you watched the fight. If you didn’t, trust me, it was hilarious. I mean serious EPIC FAIL on BJ’s part. He was one of my favorite fighters, but all my respect for him as a man went out the window with his pre-fight antics and unnecessary insult slinging towards GSP and his camp. What a jackass. If you’re going to act like such a cocky douchebag, at least show up in the best shape of your life and fight for your life. I mean, he did say, “to the death”, right? What a justified ending to a one sided thrashing. He quit. He wouldn’t even look up or say anything. He didn’t tap from strikes…he did worse. He was so battered, beaten and scared that he refused to face GSP for the last round, knowing that he would get KO’d. In BJ’s own words, I guess that makes him a “little bitch”, huh? Did you see how scared he looked before and during the fight? Pathetic. If he had just kept his mouth shut and fought a good fight, I wouldn’t have cared who won…I just wanted to see a great battle. Instead I saw a superior athlete and better fighter in every aspect who earns his respect as a true champion completely demolish a chunky, out of shape, arrogant trash talker with no respect for the sport, his career or himself. BJ’s standup crumbled against a superior striker. He couldn’t even get in a clean punch. He couldn’t get a kick, an elbow, a knee…nothing. GSP lit him up like a spliff and smoked him. BJ’s awesome takedown defense was a joke compared to GSP’s takedown clinic. BJ’s ability to escape and stand up once taken down was non existent while being manhandled by a stronger, faster, determined GSP. BJ’s awesome guard was completely useless as GSP passed at will and pounded his face. BJ’s incredible BJJ was nullified by GSP’s flawless wrestling and constant assault…not even one submission attempt from BJ, and that’s his specialty. BJ’s new improved cardio? Unmatched heart and killer instinct? LOL!!! He was gassed and mentally broken in the first round. Not only hasn’t he improved, he’s slipped. Big time. GSP gets better with every fight and trains like a champion. BJ’s heart isn’t in the fight game any more. I predict he retires very soon. Especially after this utterly spirit crushing, ego decimating ass whooping. If he couldn’t get motivated for this fight, he’s done. Now BJ has to swallow his pride, eat his words, pick himself up and get motivated to get back in the gym and train harder than he ever has in his life…all in the wake of a humiliating defeat. Or take the easy road out and walk away from the sport…quit. He showed who he really is when the chips are down. That being said, I hope BJ actually pulls his head out of his crack and grows up, becomes a better fighter, and more importantly, a better man. He is one of the most gifted athletes with more potential than almost any fighter in UFC history. But he’s lazy, arrogant, disrespectful and delusional. Congratulations to GSP. Talented, hard working, determined, and humble in victory and defeat. A true champion and a boon to the sport.
Tey both are good fighters, but who wins is a winner don’t discuss about who’s bether who’s whorst.here in Aruba there are real strong fighters for a few years in tournament we are progressing, come and see some tournaments and will see.
