UFC Fight Night 14 video of Anthony Johnson Vs Kevin Burns. I have had many people asking about the eye gouge that stopped the fight. This video picks up with the second round. That was when it started getting bad.

Burns is losing badly. He pokes Johnson in the eye. Burns is given the win.

It’s crap, really. Burns said that his intention was to strike Johnson with the heel of his hand, which is ridiculous when you watch the tape. Think about it: you put as much force into that kind of strike as you do in a punch, so why were his fingers sticking out straight forward? Would anyone fire out with punch force at an object with his fingers sticking straight ahead? You’d break your fingers 100 times out of 100.

I’ve seen this eye-poke business in the UFC, maybe a couple of times, and in each instance the commentators go out of their way to say “oh, it was obviously an accident, he’d never do that on purpose…”

If the UFC has integrity, they will look at the fight, see that it was a deliberate act — a foul, an illegal tactic — and change the decision and award the win to Johnson. It was Anthony Johnson’s fight all the way until Burns deliberately stuck his finger an inch-and-a-half into his eye socket.

The ref was not in a position to see this, although it was obvious, what had happened, the REF can only go by what he saw. Therefore it was a TKO, he stopped the fight because the fighter was hurt, not because of a poke. Does that suck YES. Burns stated he throws a palm stike because he broke that hand 3 times in 18 mo and can no longer punch, he had thrown it as a palm all fight long, with some previous pokes, but he would have to be a much MUCH better fighter to be that accurate to try to poke him in the eye and accomplish it, these guys have a tough enough time hitting thier opponent.

Burns needs to either man the fuck up and throw closed hand punches or find a new career. If you have ever had your hands taped up and worn MMA style gloves you would know that your fingers are going to be bent and poke the guy in the eye. I had bruised/cut knuckles on my right hand one time and decided to use palm strike on the heavy bag. I knew it was a mistake because you can’t really stick ur fingers straight up. Steve Mazagati even told him to close his fingers on the jab. Change the decision to DQ.

It would have been a DQ for burns had johnson not been such a baby and made out he got shot in the eye.If he had taken it like every other fighter I have seen and stayed standing and backed off complaining to the ref it probably would have been stopped and burns DQ’ed but he throws himself across the ring like he’s been hit with the right upper cut (that missed)and then lies facedown while the other fighter gives him another couple until the ref calls it finished as a TKO.The ref had no idea he had been poked until after the fight was stopped and can’t reverse his decision.

OK he even said after the fight he cannot close that hand completely due to several times he has broken it in the past 16 months he just cant make a fist anymore. Secondally he apollogized alot and did not do it on purpose. And the ref problem is the same one they are having with the umpires in baseball. They see the view from a remote corner of the field and may every once in a while misjudge a ball. We must realize the refs do not have the same luxoury of seeing the best camera angle of the fight they only see what is directly in front of them. It just so happens he saw a uppercut that put johnson on the ground and looked like it KOed him. Everyone needs to stop flying off the handle like the world is going to explode every time something goes wrong or a bad call is made. The refs are human and cannot see everything, like we can.

No point was deducted and it was ruled a tko. The eye-poke / missed uppercut combo is the new finisher apparantly.

@Jack: his hand was no where near closed. He even said after the fight he couldn’t close it because it’s been broken so many times.

When I first saw it, it looked like the uppercut connected and that’s what put him down. Replays showed otherwise, but it’s easy to see how the ref got it wrong from his vantage point.

Ok. For all you morons claiming that the UFC judges caused this (because they are racist???), please take this opportunity to learn.

The ring ref. is in control of calling fights. Now, the ref. here saw some earlier eye pokes, but he did not see the last one. So, what he saw was a huge upper cut and Johnson dropping to the ground. He stopped the fight.

Now…under certain circumstances, he could have looked at replay and decided to DQ Burns, but not here. Why? Because the Nevada gaming commission does not allow the ring ref. to look at instant replay.

Therefore, the ring ref. had to make his decision based only on what he thought he saw. Johnson going down, no longer able to fight, after taking an uppercut (which didn’t connect…if you watch replay).

So everyone shut up and racism, and conspiracy theories, etc. If you need something to gripe about, Santa Claus is not real. Someone needs to break that crap wide open.

Oh yeah. The UFC is not the party that awards wins and loses. All they do is set-up and promote the fights, and pay out the earnings.

Each state has it’s own gaming commission that independently makes those decisions. In this instance, the UFC can’t go back and reverse it, only the Nevada gaming commission can.

I see this too much. Guys need to learn to throw out a quick jab or move. Throwing out an open hand with fingers extended will result in an eye gouge, minor or fight ending. This was not a palm strike. He did it several times, was warned several times, and each time his fingers were extended and leading the hand, which was casually pushed forward to protect himself and keep the fighter at a distance.

there is already a rule against eye gouging. refs need to start deducting points if there are repeated pokes to the eye ESPECIALLY if they are determind to be intentional.
I would hope that burns is just a sloppy boxer laying his left out to distract to set up the right, but because of the repeated attempts one must think they eye poke was intentional.

I read all the comments above and I agree with a lot of you but you have to admit that if the commission does not allow the refs to look at replays at what actually happened than screw making a bet on a fight when the call is no good anyway. Obviously racism exists and there would be noway to determine if racism was a factor. Anyone that says otherwise is a very lucky person to not have ever had to whine about it. Back to the actual subject at hand, if referees are making blind decisions that effect the ultimate outcome of a fight than take the power away from the refs and leave it in the hands of the judges. Is that not why they are there in the first place. Or allow the refs the ability to look at a replay. I know this is not a hoarse race but could you imagine one without the ability to look at a replay.And by the way, if someone is grabbing there nuts it usually means they got kicked in the nuts. ref has warned burns a few times about the unintentional pokes on the jab. instead of positioning himself on the side where dubious actions have taken place, he goes to backside of burns where he has a lower chance of seeing another poke/jab. thats just not thinking on the job. to me its just ANOTHER in a lengthy list of steve mazagatti screw ups

I think Burns assumed that since his opponent’s name was “Johnson” and that he had Condom Depot written on his ass that he wouldn’t mind being penetrated in any opening,lol… You see this and unintentional kicks to the sack alot in mma. Faber did it to Jens Pulver, Lawler did it in the first fight with Smith. It just shows how stupid kickboxing is, you aren’t protecting the most sensitive areas of your body and the way you kick/strike actually causes your oppoonent’s kicks to slide up into your balls and you to walk right into eye jabs even when he isn’t trying to foul you! Not to mention the unintentional clashes of heads. I wish there was an alternative to MMA where groin kicks and eye gouges were legal. With a cup and protective goggles there would actually be less injuries than in mma and it would be way more realistic. It would kind of look like Olympic fencing but empty handed. More like point sparring than the retarded, bloody slugfests and KO’s the fat drunks who buy tickets and PPV pay to see. The grappling would look really different also. Greco Roman and BJJ would be replaced with more standing joint locks and throws, you would see zero dirty boxing/thai clinches, jumping guard, dry humping or fagotty lay and pray. One thing is certain, the champions wouldn’t be the same guys.
