Angel Matos of Cuba deliberately kicked a referee square in the face after he was disqualified in a bronze-medal match, prompting the World Taekwondo Federation to recommend he be banned for life.

With Matos winning 3-2, 1:02 left in the second round, he fell to the mat after being hit by his opponent, Kazakhstan’s Arman Chilmanov. Matos was sitting there, awaiting medical attention, when he was disqualified for taking too much injury time. Fighters get one minute, and Matos was disqualified when his time ran out.

It’s time Taekwondo goes away as a sport. It was almost removed from this year’s Olympics, but it just barely survived an inclusion vote.

With all the reversed decisions, the judging f*** ups, this dude may have well kicked Taekwondo out of the Olympics.

If the rules are what it appears to be, the ref did his job and that’s unfortunate for the Cuban. As for the other fighter jumping around for being awarded the medal, what is wrong with that? He worked for years on achieving the same goal, it may not be an ideal way to win, but win he did. Congratulations to him as a gold medal in the Olympics is something that is a dream for most people.

Now as for mma being an Olympic sport, why not? They can bring it back under the name Pankration as the ancient Greeks did have Pankration as an Olympic sport way back around 680 B.C. It’s the original mma why not call it that and come up with standardized rules for all sanctioned organizations to follow. I think it would be great but I wouldn’t hold my breath on that one.

Because the IOC is very uncomfortable with combat sports. Boxing and TKD are done with headgear, the Judo rules are crafted almost exclusively for throws, and wrestling is of course very regimented. It is really incredibly unlikely that we will ever see MMA in the Olympics, and even if it is it will probably be in a format that will not please the sort of people deriding point-based combat competition.

To restate that for absolute clarity: all the forms of combat sport represented in the Olympics utilize explicitly point-based rule sets. Therefore, unless you can devise a form of point-based MMA that you’d even really want to watch, don’t expect to see it approved by the IOC.

Competition TKD has been completely neutered and is probably one of the most boring events in the world to watch.
I feel that MMA should be kept out of the Olympics though. If MMA were to be included I can see it going in a similar direction.
Commissioners would swarm on it to make it safe and family friendly.

um, not to defend it because i did it before i started jujitsu, kempo, and judo…but if you go on youtube and put in tae kwon do knockouts…you’ll see some of the craziest kick knockouts that UFC hasn’t even had yet. seriously, check it out before you drop tae kwon do as a pussy discipline, all grace, etc…it’s the first video that comes up and it’s a compilation that has sum 41 music, which is how you’ll know it’s the right one.

anyways, i do hate tae kwon do because it’s over priced and the practitioners don’t teach as they should. plus anyone can get into it and stay in no matter how much they suck or don’t show effort to push themselves.

Taekwondo as a sport is more based of speed and agility than power, in order to get points, hence winning the match, but with this training you can have very powerful kicks, and a lot of you people don’t seem to realize that. i have a friend who is a second degree black belt and hes fast as shit, but when he wants to kick hard he can take down just about anyone. So fucking read a book and learn before you spread your bullshit.

i have a black belt fourth degree in tkd…i am training in bjj right now at a gracie school. I believe that tkd has taught me my stand up game, and i have used in real life when there was an attempted mugging. I was followed when i took out money from an atm when someone tried to sucker punch me from the back..i broke his nose and swept him. Not practical? There should be:

- Muay Thai Kickboxing, which is the best striking system
- Submission Wrestling (No Gi) as the best wrestling system

That way you have the best striking, the best grappling, and the purest combat sport. Maybe there is still a place for Gi-based throws of Judo - maybe.

It is the attempt to remove subjective expertise from the judging process that has killed boxing and TKD as Olympic sports.

The 10 point scoring system has survived in real boxing (and adopted by UFC and others in MMA world) because - with experienced judges that are properly scrutined - it works better than anything else.

There are TKD fighters that can in fact pack quite a wallop with their kicks (and punches, which don’t seem to exist in the olympics) but as has happened with boxing, they don’t can’t take the risk of attempting power shots because it opens them up to pitty-patty counter punches and kicks. Two little pitty patty punches count for twice as many points as one bone-crunching punch (or kick) with the new ridiculous scoring system.

I would love to see UFC-style MMA in the Olympics. The athletes tend to have tremendous integrity - UFC doesn’t have the incredible history traditions of TKD which is all about respect and reverance for one’s opponent, and yet you won’t see a UFC fighter kicking a ref in the head.

I learned TKD as a kid (MMA wasn’t something known or talked about at the time) and it was all about the respect - any disrespect and you were out of there - money back and we don’t want to see you.

This year’s olympic TKD was a pretty sad spectacle, I watched one fight with a Canadian woman and on my scorecard she won the fight about 25-17 but it ended up 0-0 including an overtime round!!!! RIDICULOUS!!!!

Does anyone have ears here? The ref clearly announces “Ten Seconds” and two seconds later the times up. There should have been 7-8 seconds left after the warning. A ban from the olympics don’t matter much when your hitting 40. Having them erase all his previous records from the history books probably does.

Do you really think the IOC is going to replace what they have–point-based punching, point-based kicking, point-based throwing, and point-based grappling–with MMA, Muai Thai, and Submission Grappling? Don’t get me wrong I think that would be more interesting to watch IN THEORY, but there are several important factors standing in the way:
1) The IOC is quite uncomfortable with combat sports, hence the head-gear, body padding, and restrictive rule sets.
2) The IOC “follows” sports– it doesn’t “lead.” Your scheme does not have the sheer number of potential competitors as the overall system today does.

Also, Greek Pankration allowed small joint manipulation, so it’d probably be best to stick to the Mixed Martial Arts moniker.

What’s with the 10-second-out-disqualify bs ?! The refs should proceed as in boxing - ask the guy if he can go on see if he is adequate then decide.Still, yes the coach and Matos should have been watching the clock. As far as the “Taekwondo sux” object goes it is probably the best and most difficult practiced martial art of which I have nothing but respect seeing first hand how difficult it is to go against someone experienced in it. However I must agree what we’ve been seeing the last 10 years really hasn’t been taekwondo. Matos must be sanctioned (in what way they decide ) but banning him for life is not right. I practice Tea Kwan Do and judo, and I was looking forward to watching it in the Olympics. Unfortunately I missed in and now all I can find is this video of one guy kicking a ref in the face, and another one jumping around like a little bunny. As for those of you who are complaining about the fact that Matos didn’t knock out the ref, you should be glad that he didn’t, and like Mike you can tell that he wasn’t trying to. If he had tried he could have easily. Those who think that Tae Kwan Do isn’t a serious martial air, feel free to test out your theory in front of a well aimed kick with some power behind it.
